Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has demonstrated unwavering commitment to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through its comprehensive Impact 2026 data collection initiative. This extensive documentation showcases how Malaysia's leading technology university is integrating sustainability across all facets of operations—from student welfare and community outreach to groundbreaking research and innovative partnerships.
Leading Global Sustainability Efforts
UTM achieved remarkable recognition in the 2023 Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings, securing a position among the top 200 universities globally and ranking **#1 worldwide forDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy. This achievement reflects the university's strategic focus on creating accessible, sustainable energy solutions through its Sustainability Blueprint 2030, which emphasizes carbon neutrality, ecosystem resilience, and sustainable production.[1]
The university's research output demonstrates significant commitment across multiple SDGs, with 145 publications focused on Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8), 106 on Clean Water and Sanitation (SDG 6), and 97 on Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure (SDG 9) in 2023. Operating across three campuses in Johor Bahru (1,222 hectares), Pagoh (50 hectares), and Kuala Lumpur (19 hectares), UTM serves as an innovation-driven entrepreneurial research university.[1]
Fighting Poverty Through Education Access
Financial Support for Disadvantaged Students
UTM's commitment to SDG 1 (No Poverty) is evident through substantial financial assistance programs. Approximately 9.47% of the student population receives financial aid due to low-income status, with 2,500 students receiving support in 2025 and 3,438 planned for 2026. The UTM Kuala Lumpur campus allocated RM 255,000 to support 170 students with tuition fee assistance and RM 140,000 for living expenses for 140 students in 2023.[1]
In 2024, UTM's Zakat distribution program achieved remarkable reach, distributing RM 1,898,623.55 to students and staff. The program supported 2,062 students with living allowances totaling RM 967,210, while 546 students received assistance with tuition fees amounting to RM 222,575. Additionally, 500 students benefited from the "Jom Balik Raya" program, which provided transportation home for Hari Raya celebrations at a cost of RM 41,000.[1]
The university has established multiple scholarship programs, including the endowment scholarship which awarded 64 students support for the 2022/2023 academic session. UTM also provides targeted assistance through initiatives like the "Dapur KTHO Prihatin" program, which delivered free meals to over 150 B40 students.
International Student Support
UTM extends its anti-poverty efforts globally through programs like UTM Serambi Al-Quds, which sponsors Palestinian students for doctoral studies, and the UTM Zamalah Scholarship, providing tuition coverage and monthly allowances for outstanding Malaysian PhD students. Campus Food Security Programs

The Zakat program provided living expenses to 655 students in the first semester, with targeted support for 840 Indian students and emergency assistance for 157 students affected by natural disasters. Monthly food allowances of RM 450 ensure consistent food security for vulnerable students.[1]
The university launched the "Menu Rahmah" initiative across campus cafeterias, offering nutritious meals at RM 5 for B40 students, with 14 campus cafes participating. UTM allocated RM 90,000 for rice purchases in the first six months of this program. Additional initiatives include "Dapur KTHO," providing free meals to financially challenged students, and Caring Cabinet programs at various colleges, offering free access to food items and personal care products for students in need.
Sustainable Agriculture Innovation
UTM's Innovation Centre in Agritechnology for Advanced Bioprocessing (ICA) has pioneered sustainable farming techniques. A two-day workshop in Tangkak in October 2023 introduced local farmers to good agricultural practices (GAP), covering advanced fertigation technology, organic fertilizers, and microorganism-enhanced crop yields.
The university has championed innovative approaches like the Bee Modular Box for stingless bee honey (Madu Kelulut) farming, establishing projects across multiple locations including Waqaf An-Nur Agropark, Simpang Renggam, and partnerships with ANGKASA Malaysia, Zakat Johor, and JAKOA for indigenous community projects.[1]
In January 2024, UTM signed a Memorandum of Agreement with Forest Fine Foods (M) Sdn. Bhd. to advance research and innovation in microorganism fermentation, supporting sustainable agriculture. This collaboration established a satellite laboratory at UTM Pagoh Campus focused on developing organic fertilizer products through sustainable bioprocessing technology.
The Urban Farming Awareness Day at Bandar Universiti Pagoh in November 2023, organized with Sime Darby Property, provided hands-on training in hydroponic farming methods from UTM's ICA experts, benefiting local residents and municipal representatives.
Health and Well-Being
Comprehensive Healthcare Services
UTM's approach to SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) encompasses physical health, mental wellness, and community outreach. Of the 5,872 graduates in 2023, 47 earned degrees in health professions, increasing to 85 in 2026. The University Health Centre provides comprehensive services including maternal and child health programs, with maternity clinics every Tuesday offering 2D ultrasound scans and optional Pap smear screenings.[1]
Mental health support is prioritized through UTM's Counseling Unit, offering individual counseling, group therapy, and workshops on emotional resilience. The "Save One Soul 2023" mental health awareness campaign featured extensive programming on mental wellness and self-care. In March 2023, the School of Human Resource Development and Psychology launched a six-series Healthy Lifestyle Program for staff, covering mental health awareness, stress management, nutrition, and psychospiritual resilience through art therapy, aerobic sessions, and wellness workshops.
Community Health Outreach
UTM conducted extensive community health initiatives in 2023. The Pinktober Explorace organized by the Cancer and Infectious Disease Research Group (CAID) raised breast cancer awareness through knowledge-sharing sessions on genetic risks, symptoms, and treatment options, including free breast examinations. The partnership with the National Heart Institute (IJN) through the NEXPO 2023 Corporate Social Initiative provided free health screenings for 443 local residents over two days.
UTM developed innovative healthcare products including 'Anaquin' skin care from pineapple extract with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits, and the GluCut roselle extract supplement to stabilize glucose levels for Type II diabetes patients. The university also created a visual signal device revolutionizing track and field for Malaysia's deaf athletes.
The campus maintains a comprehensive smoke-free policy across all locations, prohibiting tobacco products including e-cigarettes, with RM 100 fines for violators.
Quality Education Excellence
Academic Achievement and Innovation
UTM's commitment to SDG 4 (Quality Education) produced 5,872 graduates in 2023, including 467 with qualifications for primary education. The university welcomed 18,191 new undergraduate students, including 366 first-generation students—demonstrating commitment to educational accessibility.[1]
In a historic milestone, UTM launched Malaysia's first dedicated AI faculty, positioning the university at the forefront of artificial intelligence education. The Future Tech Innovation Research (FTIR) meeting on November 2, 2023, brought together MOSTI, MDEC, SIRIM, and MCMC to develop AI governance frameworks and national policy.[1]
The university implemented the UTM HyFlex Model Curriculum Framework for Future-Oriented Graduates, expanding digital learning platforms with AI and virtual reality integration. The Global Collaborative Learning (GCL) 2023 program united four universities in Design Thinking Process training.[1]
Lifelong Learning and Community Education
UTM provides extensive free educational resources through its MOOC platform, offering high-quality online courses and micro-credential programs to the general public. The university's open courseware initiative and institutional repository provide free access to academic materials.
The Faculty of Computing conducted a two-day digital competency program for teachers at SMKA Johor Bahru in July 2024, training 20 educators and administrators in Google Sheets techniques and automated certificate generation using Autocrat. Participants received comprehensive modules titled "Basic Techniques of Google Sheets Application" and "Generate Automatic Certificates With Autocrat".

Industry Innovation and Economic Growth
Research Excellence and Commercialization
UTM secured 39th position globally (out of 1,591 institutions) for SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) in 2023 THE Impact Rankings. Research citations rose from 84,447 in 2018 to 173,667 in 2023, reflecting growing academic influence. The university produced 1,266 Q1/Q2 indexed publications in 2023, achieving 47.9% publication rate in top-tier journals.[1]
Commercial success accelerated with 10 new commercialized projects in 2023—the highest in four years—generating gross income of RM 2,420,218. UTM maintains an impressive intellectual property portfolio: 1,692 patents, 5,327 copyrights, 76 trademarks, 41 utility innovations, 75 industrial designs, 16 integrated circuits, 126 technology licenses, and 37 spin-off companies, expanding to 22 new spin-offs for 2026.[1]
Industry Partnerships
Research income from industry and commerce reached RM 364,726,277.72 in 2026, with RM 317,074,489.11 from STEM fields, RM 4,761,345.98 from medicine, and RM 38,130,194.31 from arts, humanities, and social sciences. The university maintained 106 joint publications with industry partners and 1,787 international collaborations in 2023.[1]
Environmental Sustainability
Clean Energy Leadership
UTM's #1 global ranking for SDG 7 reflects substantial achievements. The university redeemed renewable energy certificates equivalent to 43,924.709 MWh, offsetting approximately 33,294.929 tonnes of CO₂ emissions from solar and hydroelectric plants. The Energy Efficiency Index improved from 47.7 kWh/m² in 2019 to 41.1 kWh/m² in 2023, representing an overall 14% decrease in electricity usage.[1]
The pioneering H-OTEC Malaysia Model (Hybrid Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion) at the UPM-UTM OTEC Centre represents the world's first operational plant integrating OTEC with desalination, capable of generating electricity while producing up to 2 million liters of drinkable water per megawatt daily.[1]
Water Conservation and Waste Management
Annual per capita water consumption stands at 133.34 m³ (365.31 liters/person/day), prompting initiatives to reduce usage toward WHO benchmarks. The university installed eight water filtration units at key locations, reducing reliance on bottled water. UTM participated in the UKRI-funded Water Security Hub research program addressing water security in the Johor River Basin.[1]
Waste management data from 2023 shows 2,945 tonnes of annual waste, with 84.8 tonnes recycled (2.88% recycling rate) and 9.7 tonnes of food waste converted to organic compost. The university targets improved recycling, with plastics comprising 70.1% of collected recyclables.[1]
Biodiversity and Climate Action
UTM's "Right Tree at the Right Place" initiative planted over 350 trees (targeting 500 total) in Pasir Gudang in September 2023, partnering with CIMB Foundation, MBPG, and FRIM. The initiative introduced the GeoTree mobile app for documenting tree growth and carbon capture. The university transformed Kampung Sungai Melayu into an ecotourism hub and organized World Rivers Day 2023 with 200 participants from local communities.[1]

The Faculty of Artificial Intelligence (FAI) launched by Malaysia's Prime Minister on May 10, 2024, represents collaboration with MDEC, MIMOS, and MOHE. The AIMS4STAR Consortium integrates academia, industry, government, and society through Quadruple to Quintuple Helix models. UTM collaborated with Newcastle University through the Water Security Hub program funded by UKRI, and maintains partnerships with international institutions for student mobility programs.[1]
