Disability Accommodation Policy
UTM has established a clear and funded Disability Accommodation Policy or Strategy centered around the Disability Support Unit (DSU) to ensure a supportive and inclusive environment for students with disabilities (OKU). The strategy includes specific policies for residential and financial support, demonstrating an institutionalized commitment with adequate funding.
Funded Policy for Accommodation and Financial Aid
UTM's approach to disability accommodation is formalized and operationalized through the Disability Support Unit (DSU), established in November 2019. This unit provides the necessary framework and targeted support:
- Residential Accommodation Policy: UTM has a specific policy for campus residence, providing 10 OKU-friendly rooms at College 9 (a female college). These rooms are designed for accessibility, featuring accessible toilets and wheelchair-friendly pathways. This provision ensures that both permanently and temporarily disabled students have safe and supportive living spaces, demonstrating a clear policy of physical accommodation.
- Targeted Financial Funding: The university addresses the financial burdens faced by OKU students by facilitating their application for the federal Bantuan Kewangan Orang Kurang Upaya (BKOKU) program. This serves as a vital financial aid channel, providing support that is based on the level of study and individual needs. By actively channeling students to this resource, UTM ensures that the issue of adequate funding for educational expenses is systematically addressed.
- Mobility and Medical Equipment Provision: The DSU's strategy includes providing practical, essential equipment and services. This includes wheelchair-accessible transportation services, especially for students with physical disabilities, and the loan of manual wheelchairs and walking canes from the University Health Center (PKU) for temporary needs. These services are direct forms of reasonable accommodation that facilitate daily campus movement.
By combining dedicated, physically modified accommodation, active support for financial assistance, and the provision of essential mobility equipment, UTM maintains a robust and funded Disability Accommodation Policy to ensure its OKU students can fully access and participate in university life.
