11.4.2 : Promote sustainable commuting

Bike To Work Day

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) actively undertakes actions to promote more sustainable commuting by institutionally supporting and celebrating the annual "Ride Your Bike to Work Day". This structured, recurring event serves as a high-impact catalyst for behavioural change towards non-motorized and environmentally friendly transport options.

  • Structured Annual Promotional Event: The "Bike to Work Day" is promoted as a "fantastic annual event" that explicitly encourages staff and students to "swap their cars for bicycles and pedal their way to the office." This direct call-to-action is a clear promotional activity that integrates sustainable practice into the campus culture.
  • Incentivizing Behavior Change: The event successfully promotes cycling as a desirable commuting mode by offering incentives and a positive community experience. These promotional tactics include fostering a "sense of community," organizing "group rides," and providing "fun incentives like free breakfasts, cool giveaways, and friendly competitions." These measures effectively reduce barriers and increase the attractiveness of non-motorized commuting.
  • Highlighting Environmental and Health Benefits: The promotion emphasizes the tangible benefits of sustainable commuting, directly stating that the movement is towards a "sustainable future" by helping the environment through "cutting down on greenhouse gas emissions." Simultaneously, it promotes "healthier lifestyles" and the "joy of cycling," positioning the action as beneficial for both the individual and the planet.
  • Educational and Supportive Activities: The promotional effort is further supported by educational components, such as "workshops on bike maintenance and safety." By addressing practical concerns, UTM increases confidence and feasibility, encouraging a long-term shift from ad-hoc participation to consistent sustainable commuting practices.

By hosting and supporting "Bike to Work Day," UTM systematically undertakes actions to promote cycling and other healthy, green transport modes, driving the adoption of sustainable commuting as a key part of the campus lifestyle.

Kayuhan Merdeka CPD 2024 : Bersatu Semarak Kemerdekaan di UTM

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) actively undertakes actions to promote more sustainable commuting by integrating non-motorized transport into core professional development programs for its staff. The "Kayuhan Merdeka CPD 2024 (Cycling for Professional Development)" event is a strategic action that successfully links sustainable transport with institutional values and goals.

  • Institutionalizing Cycling as a Commuting Action: The event, organized by the Centre for Leadership and Talent Development (CTLD), Department of the Registrar, on August 19, 2024, utilized a campus-wide cycling route that passed through five major faculties (FABU, FKA, FC, FKM, FKE). By making cycling the primary mode of travel for a mandatory professional development and collaborative activity, UTM officially endorsed and modeled cycling as a viable and preferred means of campus commuting.
  • Broad Participation and Awareness: The program saw participation from 40 staff members across five faculties. The route was structured with checkpoints at each faculty, where the cycling delegation was "greeted enthusiastically." This high level of cross-faculty involvement and visible display of cycling promoted the mode of transport to a wide segment of the staff and university community, thereby undertaking action to promote sustainable commuting beyond mere awareness.
  • Synergizing Values and Sustainability: The event was designed to promote not only the spirit of Independence but also the ISES values (sinergi) and the importance of professional competence (CPD). By coupling cycling with these core institutional values, UTM elevates sustainable commuting—a key aspect of environmental responsibility—to the level of an institutional value, ensuring its continued promotion and adoption as an ongoing programme.

Through the "Kayuhan Merdeka CPD 2024," UTM effectively demonstrates a multi-dimensional strategy to promote sustainable commuting by formalizing cycling as an activity integral to staff development, collaboration, and the university's core identity.
