11.4.6 : Pedestrian priority on campus
Strategic Infrastructure Investment to Prioritize Pedestrian Access
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia's (UTM) Faculty of Built Environment & Surveying (FABU) has demonstrated a firm commitment to prioritizing pedestrian access on campus through the strategic development and implementation of the "Susur Pejalan Kaki" (Pedestrian Walkway) initiative. This project is categorized as a core component of the faculty's "Initiatives to Encourage Pedestrians," signifying a purposeful and structural shift toward a more walkable and sustainable campus environment.
The core of this prioritization is evident in the design's focus on universal accessibility and safety. The project involves the provision of a covered pedestrian pathway that is explicitly stated as being safe for all categories of users. By adopting universal design principles, UTM ensures that the pathway is inclusive, accessible, and comfortable for the entire campus community, making the pedestrian the primary concern in infrastructure planning. The covered nature of the walkway is a crucial factor, mitigating environmental challenges and establishing walking as a viable and desirable option year-round, thereby actively discouraging reliance on motorized transport for short trips.
To enhance the pedestrian experience further, the initiative integrates clear and engaging wayfinding. Route drawings on the floor serve as directional indicators, which helps "attract interest and/or lift the mood of the pedestrians" while guiding them seamlessly between major points like the C06 building, Kafe Tok Su, and B12. Crucially, this pedestrian network is designed for high connectivity, linking via a pergola to the road leading toward major student hubs, including Parking B11 and the Student Mall.
This tangible investment aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly promoting Good Health and Well-being (SDG 3), advancing resilient infrastructure (SDG 9), and fostering Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11). By making the pedestrian experience safe, comfortable, and intuitively guided, UTM conclusively establishes walking as the prioritized mode of mobility within this area of the campus.
