UTM Sustainability Policy
Policy-Driven Sustainable Supply Chain Mandates
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) demonstrates a clear institutional commitment to responsible consumption and production (SDG 12) by integrating ethical and sustainable requirements directly into the operational mandates for food and supplies used across its campus. The UTM Campus Sustainability Policy 2021 (as articulated in the official poster) establishes two critical, mandatory supply chain measures that function as a concrete framework for ethical sourcing and resource management:
- Mandatory Elimination of Non-Biodegradable Packaging: The policy strictly enforces the "No Single-Use Plastics Campus Initiative" (Eliminating non-biodegradable packaging of food and beverages…) which directly dictates the sourcing of supplies. This mandate requires all campus catering services, vendors, and suppliers of food and beverages to eliminate non-biodegradable, disposable packaging. This move minimizes plastic pollution and holds the supply chain accountable for the sustainable materials used in their products, establishing an environmental sourcing standard for all purchased supplies.
- Closed-Loop Food Resource Management: The policy enforces the maximization of organic resource value through its "Waste-to-Wealth and Fork-to-Farm Programmes" (Maximizing the reuse of organic solid waste…). These initiatives mandate the systematic collection and conversion of organic solid waste into valuable resources (e.g., compost). This process creates a localized, circular system that ethically closes the loop on food supplies by reducing the need for external fertilizer inputs and ensuring that food waste does not contribute to landfill volume.
By implementing these non-negotiable policy mandates, UTM establishes clear environmental and resource efficiency expectations across its supply chain, driving demonstrable impact towards the ethical sourcing of food and supplies.
