13.3.2 : Climate Action Plan, shared

Program Penanaman Pokok Herba pupuk kelestarian di Kampung Pasir

Shared Climate Action and Community Collaboration at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), 2024

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia strengthened its Climate Action Plan through strategic collaboration with local communities and authorities under the Program Penanaman Pokok Herba Pupuk Kelestarian di Kampung Pasir initiative. This community-driven effort served as a living embodiment of UTM’s climate mitigation and adaptation strategies, aligning academic expertise with grassroots participation. The programme, organized in partnership with the Kampung Pasir Village Committee and local government representatives, aimed to combat the effects of urban heat and ecosystem degradation through community-based tree planting and environmental restoration.

The initiative identified key local challenges, including limited vegetation cover, soil degradation, and loss of biodiversity. Guided by UTM’s sustainability policy framework, the activity implemented a localized reforestation model using herbal and native species that promote carbon sequestration while supporting community livelihood and traditional medicine practices. The project outcomes were monitored through periodic reporting on tree survival rates and community engagement, allowing adaptive refinements in planting strategies.

By integrating academic research, public participation, and local governance, this initiative demonstrates UTM’s commitment to a shared and operational Climate Action Plan. It highlights the university’s leadership in transforming climate policy into tangible community outcomes—bridging institutional climate goals with societal well-being, in full alignment with SDG 13.2: Integrating Climate Measures into Policies, Strategies, and Planning.
