Kerjasama UTM-UM bantu Edutourism Taman Negara Tanjung Piai

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and Universiti Malaya (UM) collaborated under a joint initiative to strengthen edutourism and environmental conservation at Tanjung Piai National Park, one of Malaysia’s most significant mangrove ecosystems and a UNESCO-designated Ramsar wetland site. The partnership emphasized the sustainable use of coastal and forest land through educational engagement, community participation, and scientific research.

The programme identified key environmental challenges such as mangrove degradation, rising sea levels, and unsustainable land use pressures. Through workshops, field visits, and collaborative research, the universities developed strategic models for eco-tourism management, integrating environmental education with local economic sustainability. The initiative also served as a pilot framework for modelling future conservation outcomes—with and without human intervention—demonstrating the importance of adaptive land management policies.

By aligning university expertise with local park authorities and community stakeholders, the initiative enhanced monitoring, reporting, and conservation strategies that ensure ecological resilience while supporting community livelihoods. Continuous feedback and field data collection guide adaptive improvements in land-use planning and visitor management.

This collaboration reflects UTM’s commitment to sustainable land utilisation and biodiversity conservation, advancing Malaysia’s national sustainability agenda and the SDG 15 target to protect, restore, and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems through education, science, and community empowerment.
