15.2.3 : Maintain and extend current ecosystems' biodiversity

UTMKL Embraces Sustainability with World Oceans Day Mangrove Restoration

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Kuala Lumpur (UTMKL) reaffirmed its environmental stewardship by organizing a mangrove restoration programme at Taman Rekreasi Paya Bakau, Kampung Sijangkang, in conjunction with World Oceans Day 2024. This initiative aimed to preserve and extend coastal biodiversity by restoring mangrove ecosystems that are vital for carbon sequestration, shoreline stabilization, and marine habitat protection.

The programme identified major environmental challenges including coastal erosion, habitat loss, and declining mangrove coverage due to unsustainable land use and pollution. In response, UTMKL developed a field-based strategy combining ecosystem restoration with environmental education, enabling students to model and understand the ecological impact of mangrove degradation with and without intervention. Participants were guided through hands-on replanting sessions, ecosystem assessment activities, and awareness dialogues with local community representatives and environmental agencies.

The intervention is monitored through follow-up evaluations on tree survival rates and sediment stability, providing a measurable framework for adaptive ecosystem management. This project not only enhances biodiversity conservation but also strengthens community partnerships, encouraging local stewardship in protecting critical coastal ecosystems.

Through this action, UTMKL contributes directly to SDG 15: Life on Land by integrating education, research, and community involvement to maintain and extend fragile ecosystems. It reflects the university’s long-term commitment to sustainable land and coastal ecosystem management within Malaysia’s broader biodiversity preservation agenda.
