15.3.1 : Sustainable use, conservation and restoration of land (policy)

UTM Campus Sustainability Policy

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has established a definitive Campus Sustainability Policy that formally mandates the conservation, restoration, and sustainable use of its terrestrial ecosystems. To achieve its aim of becoming a model sustainable society, the policy explicitly includes commitments to enriching biodiversity and promoting nature protection and control activities across its land.

Crucially, the policy dictates the maintaining of a balance between developed areas and green areas to ensure the preservation of a sustainable campus ecosystem. This fundamental commitment safeguards the university's associated terrestrial habitats, including forests and green spaces, by preventing unchecked development and ensuring ecological resilience. Furthermore, the policy supports the health of these ecosystems through synergistic measures such as conserving water bodies/resources and minimizing waste generation and pollution. Adopted in 2020, this high-level, clear policy provides the foundational, long-term mandate necessary to guide all university planning and operations toward the sustainable management and perpetual protection of its terrestrial resources.
