16.3.4 : Neutral platform to discuss issues
Mahasiswa MADANI, Jiwa Merdeka
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) asserts its role in cultivating a neutral platform for frank discussion on critical challenges by actively promoting the values of Jiwa Merdeka (Free Spirit) among its students, the nation’s future political stakeholders. The university leverages the liberalized University and University College Act (AUKU) as the foundation for this platform, highlighting that the new legislation grants students "more freedom… including freedom of expression and the right to be involved in political and social activities". This institutional commitment is viewed as a "golden opportunity" for students to demonstrate their true Jiwa Merdeka by engaging actively and thoughtfully in national issues. UTM encourages students to become agents of change and to be "actively involved in discussions, decisions, and actions" that benefit society, effectively establishing the student body as a critical internal space for open discourse on social, political, and economic challenges. The university concurrently upholds the principle that this freedom must be exercised with responsibility, wisdom, and civility, ensuring that all expressed views are constructive, factual, and non-divisive, thereby maintaining a safe and productive environment for candid discussion in alignment with the Malaysia MADANI aspirations.
