17.2.3 : International collaboration data gathering for SDG
INATEX 2024 concludes with celebrations of innovation and collaboration
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM)'s hosting of the Industrial Art & Technology Exhibition (INATEX) 2024 under the theme “Navigating the Future through Sustainable Innovative Development” demonstrates direct participation in international collaboration on gathering or measuring data for the SDGs, specifically for SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure).
INATEX 2024, held in conjunction with the UTM Global Connect 2024 and the World Technology Universities Congress (WTUC), saw the participation of 41 inventive projects and collaboration from 20 industries and agencies. This integrated structure facilitates international data exchange. For instance, the Raw Water Pipeline Inspection Robot with Advanced Underwater Vision System, which won The Best Invention Award, and the Drone Edu Challenge IR 4.0 (DEC4IR), which won the Special Award (Community), are tangible, technology-based solutions.
These innovations inherently generate quantitative data relevant to SDG indicators, such as efficiency improvements (SDG 9), water quality monitoring (SDG 6), and community engagement metrics. The formal visit by WTUC Delegates from 25 nations and the inclusion of the ICON Talk Forum on “Sustainable Pathways” ensures that the technological data, metrics, and models developed by UTM researchers are presented, scrutinized, and potentially adopted by international academic and industry partners.
This platform creates a standardized and internationally recognized environment for data collection and benchmarking of sustainable innovation outcomes, proving UTM's commitment to sharing the empirical evidence necessary for a global assessment of SDG progress.

Erasmus+ RAMS: Bridging Academia and Global Opportunities
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM)'s prominent role in organizing the Erasmus+ Research, Academic, Mobility Seminar (RAMS), specifically featuring the presentation of the Accelerating Digital Transformation for Higher Education Institutions in Southeast Asia (DX.sea) project, provides definitive evidence of its institutional commitment to international collaboration on gathering or measuring data for the SDGs, fulfilling a key requirement of SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
The Erasmus+ program is inherently designed for high-level, structured international collaboration. UTM's participation, highlighted by its Director of UTM International serving as the Erasmus+ National Focal Point (ENFP) Malaysia, signifies leadership in this multinational effort. The DX.sea project itself is a Capacity Building in Higher Education (CBHE) initiative that focuses on collecting, measuring, and reporting data on the digital transformation strategies of higher education institutions across a region a process crucial for establishing best practices and metrics related to SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure).
Furthermore, UTM's presence at the seminar alongside other successful Erasmus+ projects including the Sustainable Development Goals in Journalism Reporting (SDGsJR) and the Geomatics for Disaster Risk Reduction (GeoDRR) confirms its active participation in a global network dedicated to data-driven SDG research. By providing guidance on crafting successful CBHE proposals, UTM is not only collecting data through its own projects but is actively building the capacity for other Malaysian and Southeast Asian institutions to participate in international data gathering frameworks, thereby scaling up the global effort to accurately track and report SDG progress.

UTM Global Connect 2024 unites 25 nations for transformative international partnerships
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM)'s prominent role in the Erasmus+ Research, Academic, Mobility Seminar (RAMS) demonstrates active and crucial international collaboration on gathering or measuring data for the SDGs, specifically through the Capacity Building in Higher Education (CBHE) framework, advancing SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
The seminar, which gathered 88 participants from Malaysian and European institutions, served as a platform not just for collaboration, but for the systematic sharing of SDG-focused project methodologies and data collection frameworks. Key UTM involvement was highlighted by the sharing of successful CBHE projects like the Accelerating Digital Transformation for Higher Education Institutions in Southeast Asia (DX.sea).
Crucially, the forum showcased partner successes in projects directly aimed at data measurement, such as the Sustainable Development Goals in Journalism Reporting (SDGsJR) and Geomatics for Disaster Risk Reduction (GeoDRR). By actively participating in and co-leading seminars that disseminate knowledge on obtaining competitive European funding for these projects, UTM is effectively exporting expertise in SDG data measurement methodologies across the region.
UTM's leadership as the Erasmus+ National Focal Point (ENFP) Malaysia solidifies its role as a central hub for standardizing and improving the quality of data collected for various SDGs (e.g., SDG 4 and SDG 13) within the Malaysian academic ecosystem. This commitment ensures that local research data is collected using internationally harmonized standards, making it comparable and usable for global SDG reporting and accountability.
