17.2.4 : Collaboration for SDG best practice
UTMCS and Tigasfera Collaborate Towards a Cleaner City, Advancing SDGs
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Campus Sustainability (UTMCS) collaboration with Tigasfera Greentech Sdn. Bhd. on the "Reimagining Waste to Energy" project establishes a critical framework for international collaboration and research to review comparative approaches and develop international best practice on tackling the SDGs, specifically SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).
The partnership centers on implementing Tigasfera's EcoSfera 1.0 system, a cutting-edge containerized waste conversion technology utilizing pyrolysis and gasification to treat urban waste at the source in pilot sites like Setiawangsa, Setapak, and Keramat. This on-site, waste-to-value approach directly challenges traditional, less-sustainable landfill models.
By embedding this industrial innovation within the academic research environment of UTMCS, the university is actively reviewing and validating an advanced approach to waste management and clean energy generation (SDG 7). The project, inspired by Tigasfera's proven success at its i-CARE Hub, generates empirical data on process efficiency, resource recovery (biochar), and greenhouse gas reduction.
This formalized academic-industry collaboration provides a robust, research-backed model. The data and performance metrics generated from the pilot projects can be systematically compared with international best practices—such as those in circular economy and smart city frameworks—to develop scalable, optimized, and replicable guidelines. This active contribution to innovative waste management methodologies positions UTM not only as a local solution provider but as a key partner in benchmarking and advancing global best practices for sustainable urban development.

SDG Explorace@Fesko 2024 tingkat kefahaman ilmu SDG dalam kalangan peserta
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Campus Sustainability Office (UTMCS)'s successful organization of the SDG Explorace@Fesko 2024 directly contributes to international collaboration and research to review comparative approaches and develop international best practice on tackling the SDGs, specifically SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
The event, which was a collaboration between UTMCS, the Institute of Landscape Architects Malaysia (ILAM), and Flex Malaysia Sdn. Bhd., demonstrated a high impact, cross sectoral method for SDG education and engagement. By using an interactive, problem-solving format across seventeen 'check points', the program modeled an innovative pedagogical approach to foster deep comprehension of sustainability issues among participants, which included both the university community and local residents.
This type of active, experience-based learning model, focusing on the practical application of SDG knowledge (e.g., reducing waste and saving energy), generates comparative data on the most effective methods for SDG knowledge transfer and behavior change. This methodology can be reviewed through international collaboration and research (e.g., within the World Technology Universities Network or through academic partnerships) to determine its effectiveness against traditional lecture-based methods.
By sharing this successfully implemented, collaborative, and measurable educational model, UTM is providing tangible evidence of a best practice approach for fostering a sustainable lifestyle and community engagement. This positions the university as a source of innovative, tested approaches for achieving SDG literacy worldwide.
