2.3.1 : Student food insecurity and hunger

Bantuan Bahan Makanan Kepada Pelajar Rumah Berkeluarga

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has taken proactive measures to address student food insecurity through the Majlis Penyerahan Bantuan Bahan Makanan kepada Pelajar Rumah Berkeluarga UTM, held on 10 March 2024 at Dewan Sri Perdana, Kolej Perdana. The initiative provided free essential food supplies to 93 students living with families in university residences, reflecting UTM’s continuous commitment to student welfare and inclusivity. This programme, implemented in conjunction with the upcoming Ramadan month, ensures that no student or family is left behind due to economic hardship. It aligns directly with the Times Higher Education (THE) Sustainability Impact Ratings 2026 v2.1 methodology under the indicator requiring universities to have structured and recurring programmes that address student food insecurity.

The assistance initiative was supported by an allocation of RM5,400 approved through the Mesyuarat Jawatankuasa Pelaksana Tindakan Sara Hidup Siswa Keluarga Malaysia Bil 1/2022 held on 20 September 2022. The ceremony was officiated by YBhg. Prof. Datuk Ir. Ts. Dr. Ahmad Fauzi bin Ismail, Vice-Chancellor of UTM, and attended by senior administrators including YBrs. Prof. Ts. Dr. Edy Tonnizam bin Mohamad, Encik Arman bin Md Yasin, and other university officials. This structured initiative, held annually since 2022, demonstrates institutional accountability and sustainability in combating student hunger.

By sustaining this programme over multiple years (2022, 2023, 2024), UTM exemplifies a coordinated and continuous system for providing direct food support to students in need—meeting the methodological expectations of a measurable, targeted and socially responsible intervention that enhances student wellbeing, promotes equality, and strengthens campus resilience against food insecurity.

Sinergi Kolej Tun Fatimah dan ADABI merewang sediakan juadah berbuka puasa

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) actively addresses student food insecurity and hunger through structured programs that leverage internal resources and external partnerships, extending crucial support beyond standard financial aid.

A prime example is the "Sinergi Kolej Tun Fatimah dan ADABI merewang sediakan juadah berbuka puasa" (Synergy between Kolej Tun Fatimah and ADABI to prepare communal breaking-of-fast meals), a program which successfully provided meals during Ramadan 2024. This initiative, organized by the Kolej Tun Fatimah Student Committee (JKM KTF), focused on a key vulnerability point: providing daily, high-quality, and nutritious meals to students during a period of reduced resources and increased need. The act of "merewang" (communal cooking) also promotes a sense of belonging and community among students and staff, which is a critical, non-financial factor in student welfare and mental health.

This program demonstrates UTM's strategy of collaboration by securing sponsorship and cooperation from corporate partners like ADABI Consumers Industries Sdn. Bhd. to maximize impact and sustainability. It is a critical component of the wider "Hubbun Ramadhan 2024: 5T" program, which encompassed a structured series of welfare activities including the Iftar Perdana (Taste of Blessing) and Sentuhan Pemberian (Touch of Giving), ensuring comprehensive student support throughout the month.

Complementing this, the university has ongoing, year-round initiatives such as the Skim Bantuan Makanan Pelajar UTM (UTM Student Food Aid Scheme) under the Because We Care Chancellor's Fund (BWCCF), specifically designed to help students from low-income families. Furthermore, the "Free Food For Students@UTM Library" program, implemented weekly, tackles food scarcity by distributing meals and essential items, ensuring students can maintain focus on their academics without the burden of hunger.

By integrating corporate support, large-scale event-based meal distribution, and year-round food aid schemes, UTM provides a robust and multi-layered program to combat student food insecurity, ensuring that lack of food is not a barrier to successful university completion.
