3.3.2 Health outreach programmes
UTM tingkat kesedaran kanser dan beri sumbangan kepada pesakit kronik
On October 27, 2024, UTM’s Development Division successfully executed the Cancer Awareness and Donation Program for Cancer and Chronic Patients, a comprehensive health outreach initiative that involved over 400 participants, including local school students, the general public, and campus residents.
This program directly addresses community health and well-being by:
- Raising Health Awareness and Education: The event featured a Cancer Awareness Talk delivered by a Clinical Oncologist from KPJ Abdul Samad Specialist Hospital. This direct engagement with medical professionals provides the community with essential, reliable health information to combat one of the primary causes of death.
- Fostering Psycho-Social Well-being: The program included an "Experience Sharing Session" involving cancer fighters, caregivers, and chronic patients. This platform cultivates empathy and a supportive environment, offering crucial psycho-social support that is integral to long-term well-being.
- Providing Direct Medical Contributions: A significant component was the Blood Donation Session, which garnered an enthusiastic response of 117 donors. This directly supplements the local community's medical resources and emergency supply, fulfilling a critical public health need.
- Offering Direct Financial Well-being Assistance: Through the UTM Cancer and Chronic Disease Endowment Fund, the university provided direct financial support, distributing grants of RM1,000 each to 27 recipients (including students, staff, and staff children) who are chronic patients. This financial aid mitigates the burden of long-term illness, ensuring a more conducive welfare and working environment for the campus community and its dependents.
By combining public awareness campaigns, direct medical contribution drives, and targeted financial assistance, UTM demonstrates a holistic approach to promoting local community health and well-being.

The CPR & AED Awareness Program is a high-impact health outreach initiative executed through a collaboration between UTM's University Health Centre (PKU UTM JB) and the IJN–UTM Cardiovascular Engineering Centre (CEC). This program directly fulfills the requirement to improve health and well-being in the local community by providing practical emergency training.
Key impacts demonstrating community health promotion include:
- Targeted Life-Saving Training: The session provided essential, hands-on training to 30 participants (staff and students) on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) techniques, the basic operation of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and emergency aid for choking victims. This training directly enhances the participants' ability to save lives within the campus and surrounding community.
- Commitment to Sustained Community Education: The program is planned to be scaled up and delivered bi-monthly (once every two months), and its benefits will be " diperluas manfaatnya kepada komuniti sekitar UTM" (extended to the community surrounding UTM). This commitment to a recurring, external outreach model ensures sustained and widening public health impact beyond the campus.
- Promoting Health Literacy and Preparedness: The initiative aligns with UTM's mission to foster a community that is "lebih celik kesihatan dan bersedia menyelamatkan nyawa" (more health-literate and ready to save lives). By embedding fundamental cardiovascular emergency knowledge, UTM is proactively improving community resilience and emergency response capabilities.
This program showcases UTM's active role in translating specialized medical knowledge into actionable skills for the local population, significantly boosting overall public safety and health literacy.
