Hajimari No Hi: MJIIT’s 1st-Year Experience Welcomes New Students

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia’s (UTM) Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT) has established clear institutional structures crucial for tracking and ensuring student access and successful progression, a foundational element of effective equity measures.

The commitment is demonstrated through the execution of its formalized First Year Experience (FYE) program, "Hajimari no Hi" (Day of Beginnings), an intervention explicitly designed to support the smooth transition of all new students into university life.

Crucially, the program’s content includes dedicated, mandatory modules that establish the mechanism for ongoing tracking and support. These modules focus on introducing students to the "Support Systems" available and, most significantly, the "Academic Advisory System".

The implementation of a centralized Academic Advisory System confirms a sustained, structural effort to monitor individual student progress from the commencement of their studies. This framework enables the university to:

  1. Facilitate Academic Access: By providing essential knowledge on the Semester System and practical guidance through workshops on study skills and AI tools.
  2. Ensure Continuous Tracking: The advisory system is the designated institutional tool for continuous engagement, allowing the university to track student performance metrics, identify students facing challenges early, and intervene strategically to prevent attrition.

By mandating engagement with the Academic Advisory System, UTM-MJIIT ensures that the necessary formal mechanisms are in place to continuously monitor and support the outcomes of its diverse student body, effectively institutionalizing the tracking of access measures beyond initial enrollment.

UTM Welcomes New Intake of Exchange Students 2024/2025

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) demonstrates a sophisticated system for tracking and reporting on complex international demographic data, which is foundational to the theme of Tracking Access Measures. The entry of the 2024/2025 exchange cohort, comprising 89 students from 11 countries and 47 partner institutions, proves the university’s capability to systematically measure and manage diverse student entry metrics. The public reporting details the geographic spread, noting high representation from regions like China and Europe, and even tracks the students' placement across campus faculties, with the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (FSSH) hosting the highest number.

This detailed institutional tracking of origin, partnership, and placement is essential for assessing global academic engagement. However, to fully satisfy the requirement to systematically measure and track women’s application rate, acceptance, or entry rate, the university’s public reporting model requires an explicit gender dimension. The article, while showcasing a comprehensive geographical and institutional breakdown, omits the disaggregation of the cohort by gender.

To strengthen its commitment to equity and full transparency in access tracking, UTM should leverage its existing data collection infrastructure to integrate and report on the quantitative breakdown of female and male students within each cohort. Reporting on gender-disaggregated data is a critical measure for monitoring the success of policies aimed at achieving gender parity in international education and enabling data-driven interventions to ensure that access is equitable across all demographic groups.
