11.2.6 : Record and preserve cultural heritage
Busut UTM
The preservation initiative, highlighted by the Faculty of Science, centers on BUSUT UTM, which is identified as "The original highland before the construction of UTM Johor Bahru." This landmark holds significant historical value, connecting the present-day campus to its origins, which are traced back to 1978.
The Faculty of Science is leading the institutional effort to ensure the landmark's integrity through the following actions:
- Sustaining and Preserving: The initiative is framed around sustaining and preserving the heritage of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia right at the Faculty of Science level. This commitment elevates the landmark's status from a mere feature to a recognized historical asset.
- Redesigning Dataran Sains: A specific project involves redesigning Dataran Sains (Science Square) as part of a dedicated heritage preservation effort related to the BUSUT UTM historical landmark. This indicates a physical intervention to integrate the landmark's historical significance into the modern campus landscape, ensuring its visibility and accessibility for future generations.
By anchoring its heritage efforts around the BUSUT UTM landmark, the Faculty of Science contributes to conserving the tangible historical legacy of the entire university, demonstrating an institutional commitment to respecting and integrating the campus's origins into its current development.
