ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT (ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY)

Campus Sustainability Policy

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) demonstrates a comprehensive institutional commitment to mitigating environmental and climate impacts through its formally approved Campus Sustainability Policy (Administrative Circular No. 42/2020). The policy establishes a university-wide framework that integrates sustainability into all operations, aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at both national and international levels.

UTM Campus Sustainability Policy outlining institutional commitments and strategic actions aligned with the Sustainability Blueprint 2030 and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles.

The policy outlines a strategic approach centred on responsible resource management, efficient energy use, and innovative environmental and ecosystem management. Key operational measures include optimising electricity, water, and resource consumption; minimising waste generation and pollution through structured waste management systems; and eliminating non-biodegradable single-use plastics via a Zero Single-Use Plastics Campus initiative.

UTM further strengthens its environmental impact mitigation through initiatives such as Waste-to-Wealth and Fork-to-Farm programmes to promote circular resource use, conservation of water bodies and biodiversity, and maintaining a balance between built and green spaces. The institution also promotes low-carbon practices through the development of a campus decarbonisation roadmap and enhances sustainable mobility by strengthening on-campus public transportation systems.

Governance and implementation are ensured through centralised oversight by the Campus Sustainability Office and monitoring by a dedicated Steering Committee, with continuous improvement embedded via periodic policy review cycles. This policy applies to all responsibility centres, ensuring institution-wide accountability and integration of sustainability practices across all university activities.
