ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT (ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY)
Training on Environmental Aspect of Sustainability
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) provides training and awareness activities on environmental aspects of sustainability, including Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG), Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs), green building, and sustainability fundamentals for staff. One of the trainings entitled Sustainability Seminar: Sustainable Development Through Green Building Index (GBI) – ESG Implementation, organised in UTMKL on 18 July 2025 specifically dedicated to staff from the Office of the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research and Innovation), focusing on ESG implementation in higher education and the use of the GBI as a sustainability framework for campus development.

Besides that, UTM also organised an UTM-linked online course, Kursus Asas Pengamal Kemampanan: Pengenalan ESG & Asas Kemampanan, held on 12 June 2025, covering introductory ESG and sustainability concepts. The materials indicate UTM involvement through Institut Sultan Iskandar and university-affiliated speakers, supporting the presence of structured environmental sustainability training content for participants. In addition, other sustainability knowledge-sharing activities led by UTM staff, including a session titled “Why Sustainability Matters in Our Organization?” delivered during Malaysia Marine & Heavy Engineering HSE & Sustainability Week on 15 August 2025, with 300+ participants engaged around sustainability culture, environmental progress, and organisational action. These reflect UTM’s role in delivering environmental sustainability education and professional awareness activities.

UTM also demonstrates its commitment to advancing environmental sustainability literacy among staff through structured capacity-building programmes under National Training Week (NTW) 2025. Two dedicated sessions i.e. “ESG and SDG in Higher Education Institutions (HEI)” and “Citizen Science in SDG and ESG” were conducted on 19 June 2025 as part of the university initiative. These sessions were open to university staff and delivered as part of UTM’s strategic professional development efforts, focusing on ESG principles and the integration of SDG within higher education operations. The sessions, led by experts from the UTM Campus Sustainability Office, provided structured learning on sustainability frameworks, institutional implementation strategies, and participatory approaches such as citizen science.

By embedding ESG and SDG themes into formal training platforms, UTM ensures that both academic and professional staff are equipped with the knowledge and competencies required to support sustainability-driven decision-making and operational practices. The inclusion of these programmes within a nationally recognised training platform further strengthens institutional alignment with broader sustainability agendas. This initiative reflects UTM’s proactive approach to institutionalising sustainability literacy and fostering a knowledgeable campus community capable of advancing environmental and social responsibility.
