ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT (ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY)

Student-Led Sustainability Engagement

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) has a strong culture of student-led sustainability engagement through multiple initiatives and programmes that actively involve students in environmental stewardship, community outreach, and ecological conservation. These initiatives reflect the presence of organised students’ participation and leadership in sustainability-related activities.

Hands-on demonstration of used cooking oil recycling during a community workshop, where participants are trained on proper waste handling and conversion practices to promote circular economy and reduce environmental pollution.

Students involvement in community-based sustainability programmes such as the Sustainable Cooking Oil Workshop in Kampung Semerah, where students engaged with local communities in promoting environmentally responsible waste management practices, particularly in recycling used cooking oil. Similarly, student-led participation in the Batu Layar Beach Cleaning Programme resulted in the collection of 174 kilograms of waste, showcasing active student engagement in environmental protection and awareness campaigns.

Student volunteers conduct a beach clean-up, successfully collecting significant amounts of waste and demonstrating commitment to environmental stewardship and marine conservation.

UTM students engage in hands-on river management activities, supporting community efforts to control invasive species and restore ecological balance in local waterways.

In addition, students were also involved in ecological conservation initiatives such as the Sungai Skudai invasive species management programme, conducted in collaboration with local authorities and communities. This reflects students’ role in biodiversity preservation and ecosystem management. Additionally, student groups from Tun Razak Residential College have led sustainability-focused activities, including the planting of 80 mangrove trees in Pulau Tuba, contributing to coastal ecosystem restoration and climate resilience.

Students actively participate in a mangrove replanting programme, contributing to coastal ecosystem restoration and biodiversity conservation as part of UTM-led sustainability initiatives.

Collectively, these initiatives indicate the presence of an active, student-driven sustainability ecosystem at UTM, where students organise, lead, and participate in impactful environmental programmes. These activities provide students with continuous opportunities to engage in sustainability practices, foster environmental awareness, and contribute meaningfully to both campus and community sustainability agendas.
