GOVERNANCE (Good Governance)

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Committee, Office or Officer and Anti-Discrimination/Anti-Harassment Policies

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee, Office or Officer

Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) upholds its commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) through structured governance mechanisms embedded within its administrative framework. The Registrar’s Department, via the Selection Committee (Jawatankuasa Pemilih), plays a key institutional role in ensuring that staff recruitment, appointment, and promotion processes are conducted in a fair, transparent, and equitable manner.

The Selection Committee operates under clearly defined Terms of Reference, which guide decision-making processes to uphold principles of meritocracy, non-discrimination, and inclusivity. Through this  structure, the university ensures that diversity and equal opportunity considerations are integrated into human resource practices, thereby supporting broader institutional goals related to equity, inclusion, and human rights on campus. In addition, the committee contributes to the implementation of policies and regulatory frameworks that reinforce fair treatment and equal access to opportunities for all staff, aligning with UTM’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and ethically governed academic environment.

Anti-discrimination and anti-harassment Policies

The university formalises its commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion through the implementation of the Diversity and Inclusivity Policy (2019). This policy establishes institutional principles that promote a respectful, inclusive, and non-discriminatory environment across all university functions.

The policy serves as a governance framework guiding staff and student conduct, reinforcing zero tolerance towards discrimination and harassment. It outlines expectations for equitable treatment, respect for diversity, and the creation of a safe campus environment. By embedding these principles into institutional policies, the university ensures that decision-making, human resource practices, and campus interactions align with inclusion and human rights values.

As part of Good Governance, this policy provides a structured institutional approach to managing diversity-related matters and addressing inappropriate behaviour. It supports the university’s commitment to fostering an inclusive culture and safeguarding the well-being of its community.
