ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT (ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY)

Institutional Commitment in reaching Net-Zero

Since 2024, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) committed to achieving Net-Zero Carbon (NZC) emissions by 2050, as outlined in its Sustainability Blueprint 2030. This long-term commitment establishes a clear institutional pathway to mitigate climate impact and aligns with global decarbonisation goals.

Strategic Priority Area (SPA) 1: Net Zero Carbon Campus framework outlining UTM’s strategic initiatives towards carbon neutrality, including policy development, carbon mitigation projects, and fostering a low-carbon, resilient campus environment.

UTM’s net-zero strategy is operationalised through a structured Net-Zero Transition framework, which includes the implementation of NZC practices across campus operations. The university is actively developing comprehensive NZC guidelines and fostering a dedicated campus-wide community to promote best practices in low-carbon operations, energy efficiency, and sustainable resource management.

In addition, UTM emphasises stakeholder engagement as a core component of its net-zero journey. The university plans to disseminate NZC best practices through awareness programmes targeting internal and external stakeholders, while strengthening collaborations with industry, government agencies, and local communities. Through these coordinated efforts, UTM aims not only to achieve its 2050 net-zero target but also to position itself as a national leader in advancing low-carbon campus models and sustainability innovation.
