1.4.4 Policy addressing poverty
UTM perkukuh komuniti B40 melalui projek kesihatan dan inovasi herba pintar
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), via its Institute of Bioproduct Development (IBD), actively participates in and supports regional policy implementation aimed at ending poverty (SDG 1: No Poverty) through the strategic B40 Community Health and Smart Herb Innovation Project.
Formalized by a Letter of Award (LoA) in November 2024 and acknowledged at the Putrajaya Festival of Ideas (Putrajaya FOI 2024), this initiative is a direct, collaborative effort with the Perbadanan Putrajaya (PPj) and the Yayasan Raja Zarith Sofiah Negeri Johor (YRZSNJ). This collaboration secures institutional endorsement and multi-party funding, strategically positioning the project within the local and regional governance framework for poverty alleviation.
The two-year project directly supports the B40 (low-income) community in Putrajaya by:
- Providing specialized skill training in traditional health services (massage and reflexology).
- Integrating smart cultivation technology to ensure a sustainable, high-quality supply of raw materials (herbs and vegetables).
- Developing human capital and creating tangible employment opportunities within the bioproduct and health service sectors.
By translating research and innovation into a recognized, skills-based training model, UTM effectively converts policy objectives into measurable socioeconomic improvement, demonstrating the university's vital role in supporting and implementing government and state-level agendas to uplift the quality of life and create sustainable livelihoods for communities facing poverty.
